Thank you for your interest in our Internal Medicine Residency Program. Here at San Antonio we take great pride in our teaching program and are firmly committed to the highest standards for education and clinical care. We practice in only two hospital settings with complementary patient populations, thus, increasing patient diversity without over-burdening housestaff with multiple hospital systems to master. These two hospitals are attached by a covered walkway keeping our residents in close contact with each other throughout the training experience. Our two hospital system is fiscally strong and allows us to remain a medium-sized program large enough to provide excellent resident diversity but small enough to provide a personal approach to residency training.

The success of our program is due in large part to our educational philosophy that puts training above service. We recognize and try to meet the individual needs of each house officer. With this individualized approach we have successfully placed our housestaff in highly competitive fellowships, academic medicine careers, and urban and small town primary care practices.

We strive to maintain a learning climate that is open and non-threatening yet encourages the full growth potential of each trainee. In this way, faculty, residents and students feel equally important in the care of our patients. Our residents work hard but are not overworked because of a night float system that provides high quality care to inpatients overnight so ward teams can stay fully rested. Pre-set admission limits are strictly enforced at both hospitals.

Teaching each week includes formal didactic sessions, attending rounds, morning report, intern learning groups, clinicopathologic conferences, and subspecialty conferences. Conference attendance is a high priority and lecturers are selected based upon prior evaluations.

We attract candidates from across the nation with competitive academic records who are enthusiastic about Internal Medicine and looking for a supportive program in which to flourish. If you are looking for a friendly and supportive training environment that will allow you to reach your full potential, we invite you to visit us for a closer look.

Sincerely,
