Welcome from our Chief Residents
Hello, and welcome from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio! We are excited that you have taken the time to look at our residency program. We thought it might be helpful to have a view of our program from our perspective as the current chief residents.
We all agree that we each had some basic objectives when we began our search for a residency program 4 years ago:
- Find a well-rounded program that would provide us with excellent training, diverse pathology and a learning environment dedicated to our success.
- Make sure the program was in a place where our families would enjoy living and where we would enjoy our time outside of work.
After considering all of our options, each of us decided on the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. None of us could be happier with our choice. We think you will agree our residency program has numerous advantages and will satisfy a wide variety of interests.
Personal Relationships
Although we have approximately 90 total residents, there still exists a strong sense of camaraderie within our program. We all work together and there is a true sense that we are all on the same team. Outside of work we enjoy our monthly outings, which provide our residents an opportunity for some free dining and fun. Our housestaff is well known for their strong work ethic and dedication to their patients, and we encourage them to be just as committed to their own well being in life outside of work. Our internal medicine residency is distinctive in regards to the relationships that exist between residents and faculty. There is a very benign, collegial atmosphere here and our faculty truly respects each resident as a colleague, rather than only looking at them as a trainee. They are approachable and truly dedicated to providing the best experience possible for the residents they are working with.
Solid Clinical Experiences
We all agree that we were impressed by the diverse pathology we were exposed to during our training. It has made such a difference with our in-training and medicine board exams, as we are able to pair real patient encounters we have had with almost every vignette given. These experiences are not limited to an inpatient setting as we are provided the opportunity to practice primary care in the community and VA settings which has proven to be a very valuable learning opportunity.
Easy City Living
Outside the hospital, living in San Antonio has been great. It is a large city with a small town feel. The people are laid back and friendly and the various cultures represented in the city’s population provide exposure to a lot of ethnic diversity. In addition to the typical big city attractions (many theatres, shopping, theme parks, restaurants. Etc.), there is an abundance of outdoor activities and the many small towns in the neighboring Texas Hill Country provide more eclectic and unique experiences. Unlike most U.S. big cities, the cost of living in San Antonio is very low and most of our residents are able to purchase homes in nice neighborhoods near the medical center with great schools.
So what is the bottom line? We feel the internal medicine residency program here in San Antonio was a great choice for us. It has been enjoyable, productive and we know has provided excellent preparation for us no matter where our careers take us.
We hope you will take the time to come visit us in San Antonio as we look forward to meeting you and showing you our program in more detail.
