The clinical activities of the Department of Medicine reflect our commitment to excellence. Our goal is to deliver demonstrably high quality, evidence-based care to all our patients in the San Antonio-South Texas area and beyond.

Through our signature programs, we deliver multi-disciplinary, patient-oriented care that crosses departmental boundaries and integrates educational and research components in ways that allow us to offer our patients the most cutting-edge care. Examples include:

Cancer
As one of only three designated National Cancer Institute Cancer Centers in Texas, we offer integrated medical and surgical cancer treatment, utilizing novel therapies and a wide range of phase I clinical trials.
Cardiovascular and Cardiopulmonary Services
Our Divisions of Cardiology and Pulmonary Medicine, in partnership with the Divisions of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, excel in all areas of cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary care.  Highlights include state-of-the-art care of patients with heart failure (including heart transplant), pulmonary hypertension, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and interstitial lung disease.
Diabetes
At the Texas Diabetes Institute, the Division of Diabetes provides care that integrates outstanding clinical services with internationally renowned clinical research.
Digestive Disease
This collaboration between the Division of Gastroenterology and the Department of Surgery provides a full spectrum of care for patients with gastrointestinal disorders, with notable expertise in advanced endoscopic procedures and pancreatobiliary disease.
Geriatrics and Healthy Aging
This program integrates outstanding clinical care with research in aging conducted by the nationally recognized Barshop Institute and the Geriatrics Research and Education Center of the South Texas Veterans’ Health Care System.
Primary Care
Faculty of the Divisions of General Medicine and Geriatrics partner with the Department of Family and Community Medicine to provide evidence-based primary care.
