1. Education and Teaching -
During the first four years of my career (from 2001-2005), I spent over 75% of my time performing clinical research in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. In 2005, my efforts shifted from research to teaching and I assumed the role of the Module Director of the Respiratory Section for the second year medical students. Through this role, I discovered that educating interprofessional ?students? at all levels is my forte and is where my passion lies. I have focused my attention on excellence in education since this time. As a physician, I help hundreds of patients/families every year. As an educator, the number of patients/families I touch by way of educating healthcare professionals increases exponentially, and I believe that this is the way I can leave my imprint on society. Through innovative educational projects, I can translate medical education for interprofessional healthcare providers into practical, easy-to-understand, and applicable strategies to facilitate improvements in patient care in clinical venues at my institution and by the dissemination of our methods, throughout the United States.
A summary of my current and recent teaching and educational activities includes:
Local Educational Activities (San Antonio and Texas):
? Curriculum development and revisions (for learners at multiple levels of training): I continue to develop and revise curricula for teaching (1) interns, residents, fellows, and faculty the pearls of reading chest radiographs and chest CTs, (2) pulmonary/critical care board review for internal medicine residents, (3) first year medical students topics in respiratory medicine, (4) fourth year medical students in pulmonary topics, (5) nurses, physicians assistants, respiratory therapists, and PharmDs about pulmonary diseases. I employ novel teaching techniques using multimedia, simulation, small-group case-based discussions, role-play, audience response system, and other methods to achieve specified learning objectives. I have pilot tested these advanced teaching strategies to educate students, residents, fellows, and faculty at the UTHSCSA, which has become an ?educational laboratory?. This laboratory has allowed testing of these innovative techniques prior to disseminating them to national and international audiences.
National Educational Activities:
? Leader/Chair of a collaborative interprofessional team to design and develop an educational curriculum for Continuing Education for primary care clinicians and other healthcare professionals: ?COPD: What Really Works? A Best Practices Workshop for Primary Care?. I collaborated with pulmonologists, family physicians, respiratory therapists, doctorates in pharmacy, nurse practitioners, and educational specialists from the American College of Chest Physicians, a professional society of over 18,000 clinician members, to develop a state-of-the-art interactive, program that educates clinicians to recognize, diagnose, and manage COPD based on evidence-based |
2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) -
I specialize in many aspects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including: research and clinical practice in the identification, work-up, diagnosis, evaluation, management, acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD), comorbidities (anxiety, depression, osteoporosis, heart disease), and respiratory infections. I have particular expertise in teaching about COPD to various levels of learners including: patients, caregivers, students, residents, fellows, faculty, primary care clinicians, pulmonary/critical care specialists, and other healthcare professionals (e.g., physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, Pharm D, etc.). |
3. Integrated (Chronic) Care Model -
I have a particular interest and expertise in implementing the integrated (chronic) care model in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and multiple morbidities. I have expertise in clinical implementation, research and collaboration through the VA Cooperative study, and teaching/education about this model at international meetings. |
