Thank you for your interest in the Department of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The Department is committed to excellence in clinical service, education, and research.

Clinical Service: We care for a diverse and very interesting patient population. We have particularly notable programs in diabetes, bone disease, kidney disease (including renal transplant), and congestive heart failure (including heart transplant). Our major teaching sites are the University Health System (recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s best hospitals) and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. In addition, we have affiliations with Christus Santa Rosa Health Care, with whom we are working to create new efforts in cardiology and oncology.
Education: The Department leads the School in several educational efforts. Our faculty are involved extensively in the teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows, for which they are widely recognized and lauded for their efforts. The aforementioned diverse and interesting patient population provides great breadth and depth for clinical training in both primary care and subspecialty medicine.

Research: The Department has nationally and internationally recognized research programs in diabetes, HIV/AIDS, fungal infections, aging, cancer, heart disease, health services, and kidney disease. Our annual research budget exceeds $50 million.

The Department’s Mission: We are strongly committed to excellence in compassionate and highly competent patient care, education and training, and cutting-edge research.
I hope you will want to visit us and learn more about our Department.
Warmest regards.
